Fentiman: The Last Days of Ann Boleyn
Whilst pregnant with my first son, I was ‘let go’ from two opera jobs because the management felt uncomfortable employing a pregnant person. Happily, this led to 180 performances of the play ‘The Last Days of Anne Boleyn’ which was a site-specific play at the Tower of London.
Out of fear of being ‘discovered’, I didn’t tell anyone that I was around 12 weeks pregnant at the time of my audition. It was only when the costume supervisor, Justin Allin, told us that our costumes were costing over £3000 each to produce that I had to reveal that my waistline would be changing rather a lot over the following six months…
I performed 10 shows a week of a beautiful, poignant show, made friends for life and got to work at the most incredible venue. I finished the run a week before giving birth.
